Study Days/Conference
2002
In 2002, the Richard III Foundation, Inc. held its conference in Ripon. The conference marked the 550th birthday of King Richard III. Speakers included Peter Hibbard, former Mayor of Middleham, David Santiuste, Michael K. Jones, Mary O'Regan, Richard Knowles, Professor Barrie Dobson with a special performance by York based actor Michael Bennett.
In the evening, a medieval mass was conducted by the Dean of Ripon. March, our first study day for 2003 featured David Santiuste and Dr. Michael K. Jones.
2003
On May 31, a conference was conducted at Downside Abbey at Stratton-on-the-Fosse. Our speakers included:
Dom Aiden Bellenger – History of Downside Abbey
Jo Cresdee of Oxbow Books on Medieval Cooking
David Baldwin on Elizabeth Woodville, A New Perspective
Phil and Denise Hill on Medieval Life In The Gloucester Household.
A tour of Farleigh Hungerford Castle, Birthplace of Margaret of Salisbury by Father Daniel Rees and Dom Gervase Murray-Bligh conducted a Memorial Service for Margaret of Salisbury.
On July 12, The Richard III Foundation, Inc. in cooperation with the Tewkesbury Borough Council, presented Dr. Michael K. Jones, author of Bosworth 1485, for a special series of lectures.
Dr. Michael K. Jones spoke at two times during the day. The first of Dr. Jones’ talks was entitled "Medieval Battles and Chivalry – A Code of Conduct” The second talk was entitled "Richard III as a Military Commander - The Battles of Tewkesbury and Bosworth Revisited".
On August 2, a study day was held at Merevale Abbey. John Austin provided a tour of the history of the abbey and church and walking tour of the alternative location highlighted in Michael K. Jones publication of Bosworth 1485.February 21 – Medieval Coventry
2004A tour of medieval Coventry began with a tour of the Coventry Council House. The Council House dates back to 1321 with many interesting items and artifacts to view. The house, dating back to 1321 has connections with the Beauchamp and Beaufort families as well as other monarchs.
June 12 – Bosworth Battlefield Conference - Our speakers included David Hardwick of the Bosworth Battlefield Centre, Paul Startin of the Leicestershire County Council, Professor Michael Hicks, local historians Ken Wright and John Austin, and Dr. Michael K. Jones.
October 2 - Richard III: Politics, Patronage and Personage Personage – 2004 Symposium. Speakers included Professor Ralph A. Griffiths, Dr. Sean Cunningham, Chris Gravett, Members from the Tower of London Educational Staff, Dr. Rosemary Horrox and David Santuiste.2005
May - Our conference on Perkin Warbeck and Cornwall featured Howard Curnow – “Life In Medieval Cornwall: Social background in the 15th & 16th centuries, Dr. James Whetter – “Henry Bodrugan and the Yorkist Background”, Ann Wroe – “Who was Perkin Warbeck?”, Donald Houghton – “The Consequences of the 1497 Rebellions for Cornwall” and the Hills – “The Knight in the Late 15th Century”.
October - Francis, Viscount Lovel: Family, Friends and Foe - the conference featured Monika Simon, Dr. Simon Townley, Editor of the Victoria County History, Joe Ann Ricca, Dr. Sean Cunningham and Matthew Bennett.
